    Baltimore Tidbits

The current community of Baltimore was named in honor of Lord Baltimore in addition to many other different ports that were located on the uppermost portion of the Chesapeake Bay and was incorporated in 1729. The land was originally inhabited by several Native Indian tribes that withdrew prior to the land was settled by European pioneers.

The most famous era in the history of Baltimore was during the War of 1812 when the British condemned the settlement as being a nest of pirates. The sentiment in the settlement was very much anti-British and this sentiment raged in the streets of Baltimore only a few days following the War of 1812, which made it a worthy target for the enemy. In 1814, the colonists decisively won the Battle of Baltimore, when they repulsed a naval and land and by the British at Fort McHenry after the redcoat torching of Washington, D.C. After the colonies were criticized for going to war by a Federalist newspaper, an angry mob destroyed their newspaper building.

Although a southern slave state before the Civil War, sometime later Maryland became a part of the Union, while keeping slavery legal. At that time, the majority of people in Baltimore were sympathetic to the Confederacy. In 1861, when Union soldiers ran wild in the streets searching for Confederate sympathizers, the Baltimore Riot occurred. Partly to prevent Maryland from seceding, troops remained in Baltimore up until 1865, when the war ended. This strategy was in place for the prevention of the full encroachment of Confederate states around Washington, D.C.

In 1904, immediately following the great fire in Baltimore the mayor named Robert McLane spoke of the help offered to rebuild the city where over 1,500 structures had been destroyed by the fire in only 30 hours. Mayor McLane was said something to the Baltimore News to the effect that to suppose that the spirit of our people will not rise to the occasion is to suppose that our residents aren't real Americans. We will make the fire of 1904 a landmark of progress, rather than decline. Two years after the mayor refused assistance in 1906, the Baltimore-American newspaper reported that the community had risen from the ashes and that one of the great disasters of modern time had been transformed into a blessing.

Baltimore is home to the first architectural monument in honor of George Washington, which stands at 178 feet and is currently known as a community of monuments. In 1829, modeled after the Baltimore version, the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., was erected. Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the lyrics to the National Anthem known as the Star Spangled banner as the direct result of the Battle Monument of the War of 1812 stands in memory of the Battle of Baltimore.

Baltimore is home to several innovative and interesting attractions as the tallest five sided, equilateral structure known as the Baltimore World Trade Center, as well as the site of the Preakness Stakes known as the Pimlico Race Course. In 1873, the second leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horse Racing, known as the Preakness, started.

Efforts were made to revitalize the Inner harbor in Baltimore during the 1970's, with Harborplace, which is a modern urban restaurant and retail complex, which opened in 1980 as well as the Baltimore Convention Center that opened in 1979. In 1981, the National Aquarium in Baltimore followed, which became the largest tourist attraction in Maryland. In 1992, the Major League Baseball team known as the Baltimore Orioles relocated to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore from Memorial Stadium. The owner of the Baltimore Orioles of the International League, named Jack Dunn scouted Babe Ruth and signed him to his first professional contract at age 19 in Baltimore. In other sports related events, in 1998, the National Football League's Baltimore Ravens relocated to the recently renamed M and T Bank Stadium.

The museums in Baltimore include the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. This community also boasts the first church that was built in the S, known as the Baltimore Basilica. This happened after the adoption of the new Constitution. The University of Maryland in Baltimore County is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the country.

Recently, there have been efforts to revitalize the downtown area, which have led to a redevelopment of the Inner Harbor. This harbor had only been abandoned warehouses up until the late 1970's. During the earlier days of Baltimore, the harbor was the landing destination for ships and boats that were transporting cargo from all around the world. The community is currently major seaport in the US.

Although at one time the economic base in Baltimore was dependent on manufacturing, the economy in Baltimore has shifted mainly to a service sector-oriented, with the John Hopkins University and the John Hopkins Hospital being the largest employer.
